News at Eleven: The poem, by Jayson Tirado of Bronx, N.Y.,

does not use profanity gratuitously, [Janet] Heller said, noting WritersCorps stands behind "writers portraying their lives as they experience it."

"There are a lot of kids who, unfortunately, have had these kinds of experiences," she said.

Angela Maycock of the American Library Association Office for Intellectual Freedom said the district's removal of the poem was "an inappropriate response to finding controversial material in a book."

Instead, Maycock suggested a standard review process that has been used in other school districts.
