W.H. Smith Young Writers Competition for a poem, Boarding School--Two Generation Tennis, castigating parents for the unhappiness inflicted on boarding school pupils. The then 16-year-old said she had watched the parents arrive at the Benenden School in Kent to play in a tennis tournament.
"It was all a facade--superficial relations between mother and daughter and father and daughter," she said. "Because it is a girls' school, the male element is taken out and that makes it more artificial."
