Poetic Obituaries: In the last years of her life [Liz] Carpenter

grew increasingly frail, but she tried to keep up with her singing group, the GBATTs (Getting Better All The Time), and regular poetry readings.

"Nobody gets by without performing," she would say. "Why should you have a bunch of . . . empty-headed dullards standing around?"
