Great Regulars: Most writers don't so much sit in their studies

as wear them. Daily they put on the consoling mass of papers, books, screens and wires. Peter Carey, however, works at a narrow console table behind a sofa in a gigantic living room. Apart from a paper or two and one book, there is only his Apple laptop. I am incredulous.

"You mean this is where you work?"

I had assumed there was the usual study somewhere beyond the glass screen at the far end of this enormous room.

"Yeah. I have to make sure it's tidy when Frances gets home."
