become a teacher. Having trained at Cardiff, in 1948 he began work at North Road primary school, Southall, before moving to Rhodesia where he taught English until 1957.
After four years at Southall Technical School, he was appointed head of English at Stonehenge comprehensive school at Amesbury, Wiltshire. He taught there for 20 years, communicating his love of poetry and drama to students before retiring in 1981.
