Poetic Obituaries: When Canadian folk singer/songwriter and

musician Kate McGarrigle died last week of cancer, I lost one of my favourite poets. Her poetry spoke of the quintessential Canadian struggle--to have an adventurer's heart and want to test one's survival in the wilderness, from sea to shining sea; to have a longing to find a sense of identity in a country that wants somehow to embrace or make sense of its francophone-anglophone separate peace, but is always challenged to choose one or the other; or to find a place to call home and homestead here, if that is any longer possible.

In Kate's words, in her music, it is easy to identify with that spirit of the restless heart.
