that what Brenda [Ann Kenneally]'s photographs depict is dishonest--on the contrary, she captures aspects of her subjects that are deeply interior and shockingly accurate. But what Brenda's photographs don't necessarily capture are moments of joy or laughter--the everyday buzz of a household, the kids goofing off, someone bragging about her latest sexual exploit, the gossip about so-and-so's baby-daddy. I wanted some of my poems to provide a counterpoint to Brenda's photographs, show them in moments of joy and empowerment, even as those moments may seem few. [--Susan B. A. Somers-Willett]
