is a special memorial for poet Eugene Ruggles, who died in 2004, beginning at 4 p.m. at the Phoenix Theater.
Born in Pontiac, Mich., Ruggles was a poet and activist who came to San Francisco in the early 1960s and became a regular in North Beach coffee houses. In the 1970s and 1980s, he organized about 20 large poetry-reading benefits for such causes as Amnesty International, Vietnam War opponents and the Native American takeover of Alcatraz Island.
