Great Regulars: With its many silences and economy

of language, "Narrowness" [by Jane Hirshfield] is an exercise in concentration. The "Day after day" that begins the poem expresses the quotidian nature of the speaker's pastime, gazing at the cats, "in the garden . . . like wary planets".
