Poetry has a strong tradition of making statements from Whitman's "I am large, I contain multitudes" to Sharon Olds's "Do what you are going to do and I will tell about it." Savage takes one aspect of the physical self she presents to the world (her hair), and uses it as a flag to profess her take on the world and her place in it.
