News at Eleven: Suddenly, 62 years after

the poem's composition, "the unmentionable odour of death/Offends the September night" in Manhattan--not as distant metaphor but as hideously local fact. "September 1, 1939" became the thoughtful New Yorker's post-September 11 standby, e-mailed, photocopied and recited at memorials.
