News at Eleven (Back Page): As black women migrated from the south

and other home regions to other areas seeking better opportunity, members of Phyllis Wheatley clubs across the nation recognized the need for women to have safe, supportive living quarters in large, sometimes unfriendly urban environments. Thus were born the Phyllis Wheatley homes, the first being established in Detroit in 1897. Other such ventures sprung up where there were Phyllis Wheatley clubs with one in Nashville, Tenn., evolving to establish a Phyllis Wheatley Room at Mercy Hospital there and eventually, in 1925, a home for aged women.
