as "Comment dire"; but "what is the word" is much more suggestive than "comment dire", since "what" is perhaps the answer, as Anthony Cronin points out: "The uncertainty which had been given expression in Watt, the first work of his maturity, is echoed in his last, for this was Samuel Beckett's last piece of writing".
