the centenary of the birth of W. H. Auden. He was already seen as something of the grand old man by 1957, when the TLS marked his fiftieth birthday by publishing this poem by the New England poet Richard Eberhart, remembering a meeting soon after Auden's arrival as a migrant to the USA.
