Soon after it opened, the store became known as a place where he mentored poets and served as a breeding ground for political activism.
"The bookstore is more than books, sort of a multi-pronged community center," said Sandy Soto, who volunteered there in the late 1980s.

Thank you for posting this YouTube link. It was great to see Raul reading his poetry again. In the early 80s I worked with Raul on prisoner rights in WA State. He is interviewed about his work on an Indian death penalty in a movie called Making the River. www.makingtheriver.com
