of the "officer of the orbits" and "the knight of death"--and, more generally, how much had been lost--or even gained--in Nazih Kassis's translation. I feel I have no more than shadowy glimpses of this narrative and its symbols, but that it is one of those poems that truly "can communicate before it is understood."
