Great Regulars: It's an age-old lament that has finally found

its technological savior--the digital publishing of books by their authors without middlemen.

It's just the consequences that still wait in the dark for answers.

Actually, the process has been around for some time, but it's taken off like a shot in the past few years, powered by such major companies as Amazon.

Competing bookseller Barnes & Noble has jumped into the fray as well. I discovered B&N's PubIt! booth at last month's BookExpo America and was puzzled at first by what it promises--you become your own publisher for free.
