Great Regulars: I've been for the past two

New Year's Eve events: last time, in the general excitement, [Patti] Smith actually forgot to announce the New Year--a minor detail, soon rectified.

This year, she will come before us as a prize-winning author, winner of the National Book Award for her memoir of early days in Chelsea with Robert Mapplethorpe. She has morphed over the past few years into a Living National Treasure.

It is extremely interesting to me to see how this is achieved, and how this small frame of a person can still generate the volume and rhetoric to whip up the faithful audience yet again.
