Elaine Smokewood was one of the finest examples of what an educator can be. Beyond that, she was one of the finest women I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Through my four years at OCU (1996-2000) I took class after class with Dr. Smokewood. She also served as my advisor for my last three years of school. Her passion for literature, and for poetry in particular, drove her students to succeed. She cared as much about her students as she did about the written word she was sharing with them. She is sorely missed by all who knew her.
