and music criticism, including studies of Dylan Thomas, Sylvia Plath, CS Lewis, Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll and on Mahler's Ninth Symphony; nine influential tomes on education; seven books of psycho-social and philosophical criticism; and 10 volumes of anthology. He also published some 10 semi-autobiographical novels, and seven volumes of intensely personal poetry.

Though held in high esteem by many, his books were never bestsellers.
