Great Regulars: If you're counting metaphors, the people

are walking by like (1) a group of cranes flying through the air, which could be compared to (2) galleys passing over the ocean--which is (2a) like the sky--as the ends of the cranes' formations expand and contract (3) like the moon, and also seem (4) to create writing across the sky with their feathers, which are (5) like quills. Mind you, this is just a bunch of guys walking among some trees near a stream. Reading [Luis de] Góngora is like traveling by hot-air balloon--you'll get somewhere eventually, but all the pleasure is in the elevation (and occasional vertigo).
