Great Regulars: [Beth Derby] plays with her readers,

never telling what this word is that she experiences as a rock on her tongue. Although the rock seems real to her, she does not fear choking on it; it may "just recede into the dark recesses of my throat." The poem challenges us to examine a word we may be pondering, to test it before using it, "spitting it out into the flow."
