Poetic Obituaries: When Joyce Ballantine Poggi opened a

little cafe in Villa Park 15 years ago, she wanted it to reflect her diverse life experiences and stand in contrast to the cookie-cutter coffeehouses cropping up everywhere.

Her coffee shop became a de facto gallery for area artists, showcasing music from local bands and hosting weekly poetry nights.

Coaches, soccer moms, grass-roots political groups and members of a local Alcoholics Anonymous chapter all stopped at the Funky Java coffee shop on Villa Avenue.
