Great Regulars: Is death really the end of our lives?

Or is there another dimension to our existence? In this poem, the speaker learns that his friend Heraclitus is dead and wonders if anything can withstand the power of the grave.

In the first stanza, a shadowy "they" brings the speaker the tragic news. They bring him no cheer, no comfort--nothing but "bitter news" and "bitter tears." The repetition that runs throughout these lines evokes a sense of shock and disbelief.
