News at Eleven: [Siegfried Sassoon] wasn't nicknamed "Mad Jack" lightly--

his displays of courage were manic. On one occasion (spurred by the trauma of witnessing a friend shot dead in the forehead before him) he single-handedly charged and captured a substantial German trench, only to flop down into it, pull a poetry book out of his pocket and begin to read from it.
