News at Eleven: [Ted Hughes] attended committee meetings

of angling associations. He did research. He spent money on river restoration. He sent a copy of The Poisoned Womb, a rather creaky polemic by John Elkington on the impacts of chemicals on human reproduction, to Margaret Thatcher. He even sat on a committee for the National Rivers Authority, when some of his readers might have preferred him to focus on the day job.
