Dulness presides over the efforts of hack writers and bad poets. Dulness is promoted by vain patrons and ruthless publishers. Dulness is the literary spirit of Pope's age (but a capacity that flourishes in most ages). Dulness is lack of imagination, lack of talent, lack of taste.
