Great Regulars: Self exposure became the banner of

a revolution against all that was considered rotten and repressive in the American social landscape of that period. And rebellion helped many of those writers survive.

This passage from the poem “Man and Wife” by Robert Lowell exemplifies the type of work written for the sake of both art and endurance:

All night I've held your hand,
