Great regulars: The speaker says that the flowers sit

there, "too much at home," and he feels that they hold an accusation of "some small crime," although the couple does not seem to have committed any crime at all. They cannot be blamed for the error that brought the flowers to them.

They could have discarded them immediately after they could not find the rightful owner, but they opted to keep them and let them decorate their home.

The speaker then avers that he is proud to be able to enjoy his ability to commune with his fecund muse, but he admits that he still suffers doubts that his ability will not fade. The speaker’s humanness always demonstrates that he never becomes so self-important as to think he is more than a striving artist, despite the unique muse he has attracted.

The rose desires to live as long as possible, as every living thing is programmed to do; thus, the "thorny ring" will do its job if it has to, even though it may become blood-tinged.

The speaker then extols the beauty of the rose and avers that the flower’s loveliness and alluring fragrance should draw the soul, not the fingers.
