Lawrence Fellowship, P.E.N.-America Center Writing Grant, a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship, a Senior Fulbright-Hays Fellowship to Romania, New Mexico Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts, Authors of the Pass Western States Arts Foundation Book Award, P.E.N.-West Book Award, the Border Book Festival's Premio Frontereza Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Doña Ana Arts Council's Papen Award and the Westhafer Teaching Award, NMSU's first such award to a professor in the creative arts.

Wilson's "Graves Registry" was nominated for the National Book Award in 1992. He was named a Knight of Mark Twain for his "outstanding contributions to American literature."
