News at Eleven (Back Page): Judith Palmer, director of the Poetry Society,

said the BBC poll, which attracted 18,000 votes, was being led by Wilfred Owen, the First World War poet, for several months.

She said it had been fuelled by a rise in the number of soldiers being killed in Afghanistan over the summer, when the number of British fatalities topped 200 for the first time. Owen, who was killed in action a week before the end of the First World War, was eventually named fourth in the BBC survey.
