Supreme Court until 1967, when then-President Lyndon B. Johnson named Gordon as a federal judge in the Eastern District of Wisconsin. He retired in January 2001.
Gordon was known as a "picturesque writer," who sometimes included poetry or Shakespearean references in his legal opinions. He was a stickler for punctuality and hated long-winded arguments.
