If so, was it a time in your life that was more perfect than the present? Or do you like to imagine a magnificent utopia in a far distant age, like the Garden of Eden or the island of Atlantis?
Middleton's poem helps us to muse on a question that might otherwise be dismissed as quaint: whatever happened to paradise? Some sneer at the notion that we are not living in the best of all possible worlds, and view all nostalgia as regressive, but this view is based on the perhaps equally fanciful notion of progress.
