News at Eleven: Similarly, in "Abishag", a speaker nursing her lover

through terminal illness licks his skull and tells us, "I can feel his mind through my tongue/as I trace patterns with the tip across his scalp." These perfectly observed moments of shocking intimacy seem to offer a moment's permeability in the membrane that separates the self from the world, or the self from the other; a chance to slip through the gaps, and commune.
