Great Regulars: The militarisation of Remembrance Day

may be designed to deepen emotional support for an age of apparently endless imperial slaughter, but every year the contradictions become more blatant and more ridiculous.

This year as Cameron, Clegg, Miliband, Blair and Brown competed to wear the saddest expression of pained sincerity for the tabloids, the memorial events were supposed to link the World War I--a "sad" war--the Korean war--a "noble" war--and the war in Afghanistan--a "sad but noble" war--beneath the unlikely banner of something called "democracy."
