searched for meaning in elements of his life that had consistently haunted and driven him; through an expert use of language, he tried to illuminate purpose and intimate perspectives on life-depicting both what is known and unknown to display the confusion of human experience.

Although his initial offerings were not highly regarded, Kunitz' later collections received critical praise, and as is so often the case with the high art, his earlier works also received due attention retro-actively.
