in Atlanta, the National Federation of State Poetry Societies awarded a Certificate of Poetical Guidance to its former president, Hammond. The award was created specially for [Ralph] Hammond, a first in the group's then 40-year history.
The Alabama State Poetry Society, of which Hammond is also a former president, is a member of the national group. It currently has 225 Alabama members, and its treasurer is Estel Dodd of Arab.
In 2003 he donated 635 of the poems he wrote to the Arab Public Library, along with 12 of the more than 25 books he authored, his beloved collection of Hemingway memorabilia and other nuggets of a kaleidoscopic life extraordinaire.
