the Vietnam conflict were one way or another traumatized, generally more by the experience of the attempt to return to the lives we had begun to live before induction than by the actual events of our military service. What I am addressing in the recent poems, I think, is the sadness over the time, relationships and productivity that was lost during those decades when I was trying to come to terms. So those more recent poems about the military are more elegies than complaints or arguments. [--Christopher Howell]
