Great Regulars: In his depiction of this feverish state,

[Thomas] Carew inadvertently employs the same metaphor for desire as the Buddha: as fuel is added to fire, so the sensual appetite perpetuates the craving for more and more of the same. It only worsens our misery when the cruel hand of impermanence steals beauty away. Age destroys youth and all the emotional ties built on mere appearance.

In the second stanza, we go beyond the cosmetic.
