as a poet in the 1970s, with three published collections of verse: Neighbours (1970), Rest the Poor Struggler (1972) and Best of Neighbours (1979). He also wrote several successful plays, including some for BBC schools broadcasts on radio and television.
His first novel, Where I Used to Play on the Green, published in 1982, saw Hughes acclaimed as Yorkshire's answer to Thomas Hardy.
