Educated at Charterhouse, by 1936 he was displaying great fluency, skill and insight as a political and biographical essayist, with a marked taste for late-17th and 18th-century subjects. The topics of his early research interests were already visible in the writings of his teens, full of the lure of shipyards and docks, naval history and seaborne warfare.
