On the 12th of June 2011 a military court in Bahrain sentenced her to one year in prison for reading out a poem criticizing the country's King.Ayat was unexpectedly released from prison on 13 July 2011 on the condition that she would not travel outside Bahrain or speak to the media about her detention.
