Poetic Obituaries: Born in Pieve di Soligo in 1921,

[Andrea] Zanzotto graduated in 1942 in Padua. He lived in France and Switzerland after the war before returning to his home.

He received the San Babila prize in 1950 from a jury including Italian poets Giuseppe Ungaretti, Salvatore Quasimodo and Eugenio Montale.

Starting in the early 1960s he broke with the hermetic poetic tradition and began writing about modern life in Italy's economic boom. He worked with cult director Federico Fellini and was a close friend of fellow poet and director Pier Paolo Pasolini.
