News at Eleven: It comes to the notion that what I dislike

about literary scholarship and the practice of criticism, about the last 50 years, is the fact that it keeps forgetting what is really the burden of the aesthetic. Talking about a poem in terms of historical factors, in terms of even biographical factors, in terms of national tendencies, but in the end what makes it a poem rather than something else in the same way, the poet in a poet, that element in Shakespeare, Whitman, Goethe which finally determines that she or he is a poet and not some other kind of a writer. But it is very difficult to find.
