News at Eleven: [Andrew Barton "Banjo"] Paterson would shed tears

over other deaths, too. In late 1918 The Horse Demobilisation Committee of London's War Office ordered the sale or destruction of the AIF's horses.

Australia's strict quarantine laws meant they were not allowed to return home. All horses over 12 years of age were shot.

Others were fortunate enough to go to British regiments in the Indian Army. Paterson grieved for the beloved walers he had cared for over the past two years.
