News at Eleven (Back Page): At Ors, he [Wilfred Owen] made it

his "mission" to lead his men as well as he could, and to serve as a witness to their suffering. On November 4, he set out at first light to lead his company over the Sambre canal. But almost all the engineers attempting to build a bridge for the purpose fell to German machine-gunners and artillery. Owen would be remembered patting his men on the back as they sheltered behind the canal bank, with a "Well done!" and "You are doing very well, my boy". He was fixing some planks by the water's edge when he was killed.
