Great Regulars: Maigret is, perhaps, an unlikely saint,

but if we consider that to understand everything is to forgive everything, we might concede that this is too much to ask. Burdened by knowledge, "martyred by facts", the Commissaire believes in a court above the one to which he is frequently called: "had God been on our side, we could have/been just such/a man".
