Great Regulars: Q: How does the personal

processing transform into public art?

A: I write first for myself. To process those feelings. Then it becomes more a piece of art. I go through and decide if each image is the right image, if each word is the right word, if each word is a necessary word, if there are any words or phrases that trip me up -- that come across as clunky when I'm reading out loud. I keep tinkering like this and laboring like this until it just "feels" right.

The best metaphor I can think of is when you're cooking a sauce and you keep tasting to see if you've seasoned it right as you go. Then, when it tastes right, you stop adding things.
