to earn money to buy clothes and was particularly fond of her Grandmother Laura Hawthorne Harris, who taught her many lifelong values and poems. Gertrude had a good memory, writing and memorizing poetry. She wrote speeches for temperance movements and was known to read a book per week and later donate them to charity.
