December 13th forum announcement

Dear Poetry Aficionados,

Poetry & Poets in Rags blog

Poetry moolah brouhahas this issue. We begin with two poets, Alice Oswald followed by John Kinsella, withdrawing their books out of contention for the Poetry Book Society's T.S. Eliot poetry prize, because of how it is funded. A clutch of links is provided in this headliner to get at the many different angles and points of view, and you'll fnd more in Great Regulars. This is followed by Vendler versus Dove, Helen Vendler criticizing Rita Dove for the poetry in The Penguin Anthology of Twentieth-Century American Poetry, and Dove counterpunching. James Fenton (in our Great Regulars section) turns this into an international brawl, or should I say row, by noting how Vendler missed the knock out punch, that Penguin would not pay for any Sylvia Plath or Allen Ginsberg poems. If these poetry fights get any more heated, they'll be in contention for fight of the year, thus far held by the Poetry Society (not the Poetry Book Society mentioned above) from earlier this year, which has a new president now, Roger McGough, our third story.

These are just the first three stories out of dozens of articles and poems in our three section: News at Eleven, Great Regulars, and Poetic Obituaries. I'll let you get to your reading. Thanks for clicking in.

Yours,
Rus
